Life with Lumen

who we are

A leading individualized young adult transitional program

Lumen is based in Gainesville, Georgia, just over an hour northeast of Atlanta in the scenic foothills of the North Georgia mountains. Rather than operating from a traditional campus or facility, Lumen offers a community-integrated model that blends real-world experience with coaching and mentorship for neurodiverse young adults ages 18 to 30.

Many of the individuals who come to Lumen do so feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, or stuck - often after struggling to meet social, academic, vocational, or family expectations.

Our experienced team provides consistent support, structure, and accountability tailored to each client’s unique journey. We focus on helping individuals develop greater self-awareness, emotional and social maturity, practical life skills, and the internal motivation needed to move forward with confidence.

Our ultimate goal is to equip every young adult with the tools and strategies they need to build a more independent, self-directed life - on their own terms.

LUMEN

A community built on interdependence

At Lumen, our approach is rooted in the understanding that growth doesn’t happen in isolation - it happens through relationships and shared experiences. Drawing from interdependence theory, we recognize that healthy development involves a balance of autonomy and connection. Rather than relying on a program-centered model, we provide real-time, community-based coaching that allows neurodiverse young adults to actively apply skills in everyday life. Whether exploring employment, education, friendships, or personal interests, clients build confidence and competence by engaging in a supportive environment that values mutual responsibility, accountability, and trust. Through this immersive model, individuals don’t just learn to function independently - they learn how to thrive as capable, contributing members of their communities.

OUR CLIENTS

At Lumen, we recognize that every young adult is uniquely individual. While no two share the exact same background or challenges, many experience similar patterns and traits. We believe that regardless of a diagnosis - often labeled as a disability, each person has strengths, talents, and the capacity for growth.

The young adults we work with, ages 18 to 30, often long for independence and a sense of belonging, but face barriers that make this difficult. These can include anxiety, slower processing speed, limited social insight, fear of failure, self-doubt, and a persistent feeling that they don’t quite "fit in." Many carry diagnoses such as ADHD, ADD, mild OCD, Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NLD), Learning Disabilities (LD), or Autism Spectrum Disorder, often with more than one diagnosis present.

Most of our clients are bright, capable, and motivated - but often anxious in new or unstructured settings. They may struggle socially or academically and frequently haven’t had the opportunity to develop the practical life skills required for sustained success. Despite their potential, they may feel stuck, frustrated, or unable to meet the milestones expected of them.

Many arrive at Lumen feeling discouraged after repeated setbacks in trying to meet family or societal expectations. Through a shift in environment and access to consistent coaching and support, they’re given space to rediscover their strengths, build resilience, and move beyond the fear of failure. This process helps them grow personally, socially, vocationally, and academically. As they begin to experience real success, that momentum becomes a catalyst for long-term confidence, competence, and a more self-directed, fulfilling life.
